If paradise exists, is it walled? Does it have a gate? And is there a sign beside that gate, telling you plainly that you have arrived?
The idea is older than it seems. The word paradise comes from the Old Persian pairidaeza, meaning a walled enclosure or garden. From the very beginning, paradise was imagined as a place with a boundary: an inside and an outside, and a threshold between them.
With This Is The Place, Bruno V. Roels makes those signs. These small ceramic plaques have the scale of a nameplate beside a door. Each one carries its own name: Paradiso, Paradisi, Welcome Temple, Ouroboros. Each announces arrival, but none of them says where. The sign becomes the place itself. You hold it, hang it, live with it, and wherever it ends up, paradise begins.
